Working On Finding My Passion!!

No, Sorry Hubby, not the kind your thinking of!! LOL!!
My Passion for decorating my home!!

I have been a busy little bee the last few days. I got great inspiration from Dawn, as I talked about in my last post.
Before reading her post about finding your passion, I was in a decorating slump. I wanted to change somethings in my home but I didn't know what I wanted to do. All I did know is that I was tried of just about everything! I would look at other photos and just drool. Then I would look around at my home and get frustrated because it wasn't what I wanted. I was stuck in a rut.

So back to Dawn's post. She said to start with your favorite room in your home. So I did... which is my dining room. Even though it is my favorite room, I was still tried of the way it looked. I wanted something new. It had looked pretty much the same for years. The only thing that had changed was that more and more got put in there. Every time I bought something new, it seemed to end up in the dining room. Time for a change.
So how I started was... I moved most of the items out of my dining room and just piled them up into my living room. Leaving only the furniture and the items I knew I wanted to keep.

Then I went through the items.
I asked myself do you LOVE this piece or is just filler?
Filler, as in:
~ Items I once loved but now have grown tried of.
~ Or items I bought online, at auctions, yard sales or antique stores and once I got them home thought, "What was I thinking!!".
~ Or of course the one I am terrible about... items that I couldn't find a place for anywhere else so I just stuck it somewhere. (For me that meant the dining room!)

Below I have added before and after photos.
I still consider the room a work in progress.

I feel like it still needs some tweaking here and there.
But I think it looks good. It actually looks better in person than in the photos. I tried over and over to get good shots... but I am horrible at taking photos.

Now I must warn you... compared to what it looked like before, it does look somewhat bare in photos. This where the, "it looks better in person" is very true!

So here is a view of what I have been doing. Let me know what you think. And yes, it is okay to be completely honest. If you don't like it, let me know. If you think it looked better before, it is okay to say so. Or if you see something I should do differently, just let me know, I'm always up for suggestions.
Thanks so much for stopping by and reading my post!

Thanks so much Dawn! Im not happy with the photos I took. But I am happy with the room. Like I said, it really does look better in person. I have been working on other rooms also. I did some changes in my mud room and my kids bathroom. Today I meant to go down and finish up my family room which I have literally been working on for over a year. But I haven't done it yet! Oh well, there is always tomorrow. Thanks again. Talk Soon, Tam

Hi Tam, I love both sets of pictures but am amazed at the after shots. I think your diningroom looks so much larger and uncluttered. I must ask what did you do with all the goodies you removed? I too am in the process of weeding out and keeping my most treasured finds. Can't wait to see your other makeovers. Hugs Theresa

Hi Theresa, Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I do agree it does make the room look and definitly feel bigger. As for my goodies that I removed. Well, the pieces that I do still love but didnt use because I wasnt wanting to over stuff the room, will be moved somewhere else. I have them piled up down stairs. As I work on the other rooms I will pick from the pile when I need or want something new for a certain spot. The rest of the prim goodies will be sold off at my website. I also have a pile of "going to sale". As soon as I get the time I am going to be doing alot of listing!! :) Thanks again, Tammy

Tammy...I have always loved your dining room but I have to say after seeing your changes I think I love it even more!! You have the best collections of anyone I know but now I can see them and drool over them much easier!! :-)
Definitely a room I would want to spend time in!! I agree with Dawn...I think you hit the jackpot with this makeover!! Karen

Hi Jen,
Thanks so much for stopping by!! Yes, it is a continuous process. I'm always selling off pieces from my collections. But somehow the dining room still seemed to grow and grow with stuff! Im trying to clear through things and not have so much everywhere. But rather display only things I love and in a more structured way. Which is a hard thing to do. Even when decorating the DR, I had to stop myself from just sticking stuff and letting myself get carried away. Im trying to have self control!! :) Wish me luck!! LOL! Thanks again, Tammy

Thanks so much Rondell!! ~Tammy

Oh Karen... Thanks so much! I've always loved my DR. But to be truthful, I never really noticed how overflowing with stuff it really was until I saw the B4 and After photos.
Im still quite addicted to "clutter". So wish me luck on trying to accomplish the look I truly want.
Thanks again for stopping by, Tammy

I think your after pictures are great. I liked the befores, but when you take some things out, what's left really stands out. It is so easy to keep buying really neat things. I am trying to ask myself where in the world will I put it before it comes home with me. Unless it is something that I LOVE, it usually stays. Thanks for sharing and the great inspiration. Thanks for following me, I now follow you as well. Have a great day!!

Tammy I am a lover of stuff. I love things tucked into every corner and things stacked on the floor or filling the space under open bottom cabinets, tables and benches but your "after pictures" have made me re-think a few things.
I love all your decorations but the more I look at your after pictures, I feel like I am seeing more. Things I missed with so much displayed. Maybe there is something to that saying "More is less." I definitely think you should let your new arrangement settle in for a few days and I think you will see that you do really like the way it looks. You haven't taken you out of the dining room, you have just opened it up.
Good luck on succeeding in finding your Passion.
Hugs,
AMY

I think you did a wonderful job. I tend to pack things in every corner and space. however every home I see that I wish mine was like is not cluttered! Simplify is not so easy for me to do!! lol

Tammy ~ A Primitive Place said...

Hi Audry,
Thanks so much for stopping by. I completely understand. You sound just like me. It is quite difficult. But I am wanting more of a Colonial style, which means more defined lines and spaces. So I had to clear out some things. Now my goal is to find more Colonial design goodies to display. I will never loose all of my Prim decor but I am going to try to mix the two styles a bit. Wish me luck!! :) Thanks again, Tammy
